Hearing God
Learning to hear the voice of God changes
everything! In the words of Graham Cooke: "God is relentlessly kind." The voice of God is the one who comforts, uplifts, and encourages you. It's enthusiastic, joyful, and humorous. Even when He corrects us, His correction leaves us feeling "brilliant." God doesn't do guilt or condemnation.
Not all thoughts inside our head are produced by ourselves, but some are instead only picked up by our brain from an outside source, like radio waves picked up by a radio antenna. But outside waves feel similar to our own waves, so most of us aren't aware of this. Sometimes we receive thoughts that were transmitted from other people. When two people seemingly come up with the same idea at the same time, or when you already know what a person is about to say a split second before he or she says it, this is often the case. And of course, some of the thoughts in our head actually come from God or other Spirit Beings.
Discernment is the ability to tell the difference, and to know whether the thoughts in our head came from a trustworthy source or not. God encourages, while the Enemy condemns.
Jesus said:

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give eternal life to them.
They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand." (WEB, John 10:27-28)
Of the Good Shepherd He says:

"Whenever he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. They will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him; for they don’t know the voice of strangers.” (WEB, John 10:4-5)
What is Prophecy?
Prophecy is: "the human reporting of divine revelation. It is speaking forth in merely human words, something that God has spontaneously brought to mind... and faithfully reporting it to others."

Prophecy may be adressing the past, present, or future. The purpose is to build up, strengthen, comfort, and encourage people. It's an act of relationship, meant to draw people closer to the Father and bring glory to Jesus. It gives a sense of "God is with us." Of all the gifts, the one we should seek after the most is the Gift of Prophecy.
Because prophecy must be translated from the spiritual realm into the material realm, sometimes
human error is introduced. So, we must approach this with humility. The language of heaven is often symbolic. Sometimes people misunderstand parts of divine communication. Or sometimes they correctly interpret the symbol, but apply incorrect application. The more time we spend with Jesus, the more familiar we become with His voice. The more symbols we learn, the more we can add to our personal symbol library.
Many symbols translate the same for many individuals, because of common culture. However, some symbols many translate differently from person to person based on personal taste and life experience. For example, some people like spiders and some people don't, so the meaning of spider may change from person to person. Studying the Bible will quickly increase our symbol vocabulary, and increase commonality between the symbol vocabularies of individuals.
Dreams
Dreams, a type of prophecy, are visions that happen while we're sleeping. Back when I was first learning prophecy, I relied heavily upon dreams to build my confidence, because it's much harder for me to control my thoughts while asleep than while awake. Dream interpretation taught me so much. Some of my dreams are recorded on my
Dream Page. Some people say they can't remember their dreams. That's ok, just practice hearing God while you're awake. Also, if you desire prophetic dreams, don't hesitate to ask God for it.
